I had my first basketball game today. It was for a league called the Challenger league. Its a league specially formed for handicapped people like myself and my best friend Devin and my other friend Lashay. Now, me, I could play on a regular league if I applied myself to it, but I never will because I have issues with serious competition. So anyway, heres how it went: Me, Devin and Lashay got there at the same time. (It was a home game). So once I got my uniform and changed into it, I went out onto the court and met up with them. I am #21, Lashay is #22, and Devin is #23. Devin is severely visually impaired. He is blind to the point where, lets put it this way. Clap your hands and stop them as soon as they come apart, then move them an inch closer. THAT'S how close something has to be to him for him to even HOPE to see it. He is also deaf. But he has a hearing aide in his right ear. If he takes it out, he can hear NOTHING. Anyway, Lashay is mentally retarded. Thats it. And the other kid, Jimmy, is severely autistic. Me, I have CP. My left side is basically useless. I'm blind, deaf, and partially paralyzed on that side. So anyway, back to Challenger. We, (me, Devin, and Lashay) met up on the court, grabbed a ball, and tried to make baskets before the game started. Lashay was awesome, I made one basket, and Devin made none. So, the game starts, but, in our league, we're supposed to have "buddies" to help us out with figuring out what we're supposed to be doing. Problem was, we had no buddies there. So we had to borrow cheerleaders. The game starts. The national anthem was sung and the buzzer went off. They threw the ball out on the court and we ran like hell to try to get it from the other team's players. Eventually, we got the ball and Lashay made a basket. The difference between a regular basketball or, any sports league, and a Challenger on, is that in Challenger, there's only one rule: don't go out of bounds. Other than that, as long as nobody dies, you can do whatever. So we played the game, and we lost. I don't know the score because after the first period they cleared the board and never put it back up, but I went up to one of the coaches and he said we lost. I was still, and am still on a high because I made 2 baskets. I kept my uniform on all day, which is saying something because its a thin tee shirt and shorts. I was on a huge high because I have not played basketball or, any physical sport competitively since fourth grade. I felt awesome. So yeah, that was my Sunday.
